Over the past two decades, employee financial participation has undergone dramatic changes worldwide. As globalization has progressed, a combination of factors such as the growth of multinational corporations, pension and welfare reform, privatization, and the accelerating pace of technological change have resulted in profound changes in the strategies and methods for compensating employees at all levels.

The newly published Employee Financial Participation: An International Survey provides an overview of key international trends in employee ownership, pension reform, equity compensation, privatization, and employee financial participation in over 30 countries. Authored by David Binns, this survey of the legislative and regulatory changes in both established and emerging economies covers a broad range of plans including profit sharing schemes, employee stock ownership plans and stock options. Each chapter gives an historical perspective of the development of employee financial participation programs, provides an overview tax, legal, accounting and stock exchange issues where applicable, and offers examples of the impact of employee financial participation on individual firm performance.

Global competitive pressures, remote workforces and flattened management hierarchies have required that governments and companies around the world create laws and establish policies that permit some form of employee financial participation. The book illustrates how these efforts have manifested across the European Union, in the near and far East, as well as in Africa and the Americas.

Published by the John M. Olin Institute for Employment Practice and Policy at George Mason University, Employee Financial Participation is an excellent reference source for international employee ownership and financial participation. It can be purchased at the UCSD Bookstore or at www.amazon.com.
