Beyster Institute
South Asia

The Beyster Institute recently presented a professional development program for university faculty from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The Dynamic Entrepreneurship Classroom clinic was designed to enhance the teaching of entrepreneurship within the participants' existing business programs by sharing innovative, experiential entrepreneurship teaching methods and conducting a practicum with feedback from students.

In December 2005, the first session of the clinic took place in San Diego, California. This phase was designed to enhance entrepreneurship education and build a network of entrepreneurship educators in the region. Clinic instructors included U.S. faculty from a variety of academic institutions, including Syracuse University's Program in Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises, San Diego State University's Entrepreneurial Management Center and the
University of San Diego's Leadership Institute for Entrepreneurs. At the end of the program, South Asian visiting faculty tried out new instruction methods in a classroom setting with Rady MBA and other UCSD students.

At the end of the first phase of the program, participants unanimously decided to create South Asia Forum for Entrepreneurship Education and Research (SAFEER). This provides a platform for entrepreneurship teachers, trainers and researchers to disseminate learning and knowledge.

A second phase of training took place January 10 - 14, 2006 at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India in Ahmedabad. There, phase one participants shared entrepreneurship teaching methodologies with a larger group of South Asian university instructors. SAPET is presented by the Beyster Institute at the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego through funding from the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs South Asia
Professional Exchange and Training Program and in cooperation with the Centre for Small and Medium Enterprise Growth and Development Finance (CESMED), India.
