Capacity Building for Civil Society and Non-governmental Organizations

The Beyster Institute believes that applying the values of entrepreneurship to the civil society sector helps build capacity and create stronger organizations. These values - looking for opportunities, leveraging resources effectively, taking calculated risks, hiring and training the best people, building alliances and maintaining flexibility - are integrated into our programs and our methodology.

Beyster Institute capacity building programs offer an integrated combination of assessment, training, mentoring, network development, and personalized action planning to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and motivation to make sustainable improvements in their own organizations.

Based on years of experience assisting CSOs and NGOs, the Beyster Institute has developed an outcome-focused approach to capacity building centered on three areas:

Leadership furthers the professional development of CSO executives by integrating frameworks on leadership and management strategy with participants’ own experience. Topics include:

  • Defining vision and mission
  • Critical skills for social entrepreneurs
  • Governance – working with a Board
  • Strategic planning

Program enables participants to learn various techniques that will assure results from mission-driven programs. Topics include:

  • Advocacy
  • Building coalitions and alliances
  • Measuring success
  • Marketing for social change

Organization develops participants’ knowledge and skills to assure that their organizations will be fiscally sound. Topics include:

  • Financial management
  • Philanthropy
  • Fundraising
  • Proposal writing

This approach delivers the tools and techniques that enable participants to create sustainable outcomes.  Leaders who have been through our programs have engaged their boards in the planning process, implemented their personalized action plans, and used their networks to start new programs.
